The Jewish War Veterans of the United States of America, opening its 57th annual convention here today, was urged by its national commander, Paul Ginsberg, to work for repeal of the McCarran Immigration Act and the adoption of an immigration statute “that genuinely represents American principles of justice and equality of opportunity.” More than 4,000 delegates are attending the convention which will last four days.

A message from President Truman praised the Jewish veterans for their “constructive efforts in behalf of your fellow Americans, regardless of race, creed or color” and said that “today’s events present not only the strongest challenge from the forces of evil, but also the greatest opportunity for good, in the history of mankind.” The message added that: “We in America have it within our power to work without stint for an enduring structure of international peace built on the solid foundation of justice and security for all.”

A certificate of merit “for exceptional service to American Jewry” will be presented to Irving Kane, chairman of the National Community Relations Advisory Council, at a luncheon to be held in his honor at the Hotel Chelsea. A discussion will take place on the outcome of the Maclver Report, the set of recommendations on reorganization of Jewish agency work which precipitated the American Jewish Committee–Anti-Defamation League walkout at the N.C.R.A.C. plenary session early in September.
