High officials of the U.S. Government and members of the diplomatic corps today attended memorial services for Dr. Chaim Weizmann arranged by the Israel Embassy at the Adas Israel Synagogue here. President Truman was represented at the service by Gen. H.H. Vaughan, his personal representative. Secretary of State Dean Acheson was represented by John F. Simmons, chief of the State Department’s Division of Protocol.
Others present were: Assistant Secretary of State Henry Byroade, in charge of the Near Eastern Division; Fred Waller, head of the Israel-Jordan Desk; Herbert Gaston, president of the Board of Governors of the Export-Import Bank; Ambassador Henri Bonnet of France and diplomatic representatives of Great Britain, Canada, Austria, Belgium, Yugoslavia, Turkey, Switzerland, Uruguay, and many other nations. Among the participants in the ceremony were representatives of the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force and of the major political parties and the Congress.
Other distinguished persons who paid respects to the late Israel President included representatives of national organizations and learned societies, rabbis and church dignitiaries, Commissioners of the District of Columbia, presidents of universities, and heads of Jewish and other civic and service organizations. A number of personal friends and scientific colleagues of the late President were present, as were former members of the American Embassy staff in Tel Aviv who are now in Washington.
