Leaders of the Jewish labor movement in the United States today picketed the Soviet Embassy here in protest against Moscow’s anti-Jewish campaign. They carried placards reading: “Stop Soviet Butchery Behind the Iron Curtain,” “Jews Protest Red Anti-Semitism” and “End Soviet Persecution of Jews.”
The group, led by Adolph Held, chairman of the Jewish Labor Committee, several days ago telegraphed Soviet Ambassador Georgi Zarubin asking for an appointment. The request was today termed “insulting” by a secretary of the Soviet Embassy. Following the demonstration in front of the Embassy, the Jewish labor leaders went to the Capitol where they conferred with a number of members of Congress on the situation of the Jews in the countries behind the Iron Curtain.
Members of the delegation included leaders of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union; New York City C.I.O. Council; United Hatters, Cap, and Millinery Workers; Hotel and Restaurant Workers; United Hebrew Trades; Hebrew Actors Union; Workmen’s Circle; Painters, Decorators and Paperhangers; Jewish Pen Club; Congress for Jewish Culture; and the Jewish Labor Committee.
