Liberalization of economic controls in Israel was demanded today at a meeting of General Zionist leaders and economic experts. At the sametime, the speakers agreed that although it is necessary to lift controls on foreign currency in order to attract more capital from abroad, the easing of such controls must be done gradually. Dr. Peretz Bernstein, Minister of Trade and Industry, outlined the pressing economic situation but added that conditions could be expected to improve slowly.

S.S. Hoofien, director of the Israel National Bank, speaking before the Haifa Maritime Club, cautioned against too great a dependence on industrialization as the overall solution for Israel. He stressed that for some decades to come Israel will be mainly an agricultural country and secondarily an industrial one.
