Two thousand mules and 900 mares will be sent to Israel for use in agricultural settlements, Mrs. Rose L. Halprin, acting chairman of the Jewish Agency, announced today. The Agency has completed the signing of contracts for the purchase and transportation of the livestock. The animals are consigned to the Agency’s agricultural colonization department in Israel and will be distributed throughout the country, especially in areas where the soil is unsuitable for the use of tractors.
The Jewish Agency office here also reported today the conclusion of an agreement between the Israel Government and the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund which will effect a major increase and improvement in the production and distribution of milk in Israel. Under terms of the agreement, UNICEF will supply Israel with $300,000 worth of bottle-making, bottle-filling and sterilizing equipment free of charge and will also cover the costs of shipping the equipment to Israel and related expenses totaling $50,000.
The bottle-making machinery will be installed at the Phoenicia Glass Works near Haifa which will produce 2, 000,000 milk bottles this year and 200, 000 replacements annually. The bottling equipment will be set up at Tnuva dairies in Tel Aviv, Haifa and Jerusalem. As a result, over 300, 000 quarts of milk will be pasteurized and bottled daily for distribution in the Tel Aviv, Haifa and Jerusalem areas. The immediate beneficiaries of the program will be some 250,000 children and 25,000 mothers in and near the three largest cities.
