Six major amendments to the McCarran-Walter Immigration Act are requested in a resolution forwarded today to President Eisenhower and to Congressional leaders by the Conference Committee of National Jewish Women’s Organizations which represent 1,000,000 women.
The amendments which, in the opinion of the women’s group, would make the Act conform with “fundamental democratic principles” are: Elimination of the national origins quota system; Increase of the number of possible annual admissions of immigrants; Establishment of a permanent and Independent commission on immigration and naturalization. Also, elimination of deportation provisions against an individual admitted for permanent residence unless entry was based on fraud; Abolition of distinctions between native born and naturalized citizens; Institution of procedural safeguards for the protection of the alien as well as the security of the United States, in all immigration proceedings.
The organizations in whose behalf the resolution was presented include: Hadassah; Mizrachi Women’s Organizations of America; National Council of Jewish Women; National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods; National Ladies’ Auxiliary, Jewish War Veterans; National Women’s League of the United Synagogue; Pioneer Women’s Organization; Women’s American ORT; Women’s Branch, Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America; Women’s Division, American Jewish Congress; and Women’s Supreme Council, B’nai B’rith.
