Ambassador Abba Eban, Israel’s chief delegate to the United Nations, conferred here yesterday with Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., head of the American delegation at the U.N., it was revealed here today by the Israel consulate.
The hour-long conversation was devoted to a discussion of the general situation in the Middle East and about Middle East questions before the U. N.,; particularly those pertaining to Israel and the Arab states. Arthur Lourie and Gideon Raphael, members of the Israel delegation at the U. N., participated in the meeting, as did two of Ambassador Lodge’s assistants. It is understood that Ambassador Eban was encouraged by the atmosphere which prevailed during the meeting, which took place at the Israel consulate.
Addressing the opening session of an Israel Institute at the Jewish Theological Institute of America last night, Mr. Eban said that “Israel today incurs the hostile menace of totalitarianism precisely because it brings the contrary doctoine of liberty into an area which seemed safe for despotism.” He added that since Israel’s security is threatened as a result of its devotion to the democratic cause, it should be entitled to expect “increased solidarity” from its democratic friends.
