The outbreaks of anti-Semitism in the Communist countries “underline the importance of keeping Israel strong and vigorous,” Associate Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas told a luncheon of the Jewish Welfare Fund of San Francisco.
The Justice, who saw in the Soviet Union’s action an expression of confidence in its strength, said that the Communists were working toward domination of the Middle East and considered anti-Semitism “a useful ally in a political approach to many of the people who inhabit the region.” Mr. Douglas, a noted authority on the Near East, stressed that “Israel is a far-flung outpost of Western civilization, Western culture, Western ideology” in the Middle East.
