A joint committee of the New York State Legislature yesterday killed a proposal to change the state’s Sabbath law to permit persons who observe the Sabbath on Saturday to keep their places of business closed on that day and open on Sunday. The present law does not permit operation of businesses on Sunday, with several exceptions.

The committee in voting against a thorough-going revision of the Sabbath law said that it felt permitting Sunday operation would lead to abuses and would be unenforceable However, it agreed to sponsor amendments of the Sabbath law to permit the sale of a number of additional items on Sunday, including articles of food and magazines. Punishment of offenders would also be lightened in some cases by the liberalizing provisions supported by the committee.
