The Israel Government hopes to transfer some 25,000 to 35, 000 families, totaling about 100,000 people to agriculture from other pursuits within the current year, Finance Minister Levi Eshkol revealed here.
Mr. Eshkol disclosed that the funds for the project would come from the government’s compulsory loan on property, which is expected to net 44, 000, 000 pounds within three years. He made no reference to the methods to be used to induce so large a number of persons to take up farming, but it is believed here that economic pressure will be successful where exhortations have failed in the past.
Israel Army units of all services including combat units will henceforth receive a half-year course in agricultural training and related field work, a new military regulation announced here. The regulation is in accordance with the Israel military service bill which provides for one year’s agricultural service, but, owing to Israel’s state of emergency, has not been carried out, up until now. Conscripts hitherto have been taken into regular Army units.
