The cornerstone laying ceremonies for the Tomb of the Unknown Jewish Martyr, dedicated to the 6,000,000 Jews annihilated by the Nazis, will be postponed from April 19th to May 17th–the tenth anniversary of the day when the heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto ended the revolt against the German Army, it was announced here today.
The decision to postpone the ceremony was taken to avoid conflict with the municipal elections which are to take place throughout France starting April 26 and ending May 3. During that period no member of the French Cabinet, or any other representative of the French Government, is permitted to participate in public ceremonies. Desirous of having high government officials at the ceremony as well as representatives of the Paris municipality, which granted the land for the monument, French Jewish leaders decided to delay the ceremonies until after the elections.
