The commercial treaty between Israel and Argentina has been extended and a new cultural agreement between the two states has been signed by Israel Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett and his Argentine counterpart, it was announced here today. Meanwhile, Mr. Sharett, who was scheduled to go to Uruguay yesterday, was forced to delay the trip because he was confined to be with an attack of influenza.
The cultural agreement provides that chairs teaching the language, literature, history and art of each nation will be established at universities in the other country. In addition, facilities will be provided for research for scholars of the other country and teachers and students will be exchanged, as will be books, papers, journals, films and other educational and cultural materials. The commercial pact, which was extended with the agreement of President Peron, provides that Israel may pay for a greater portion for Argentine goods with Israel products rather than cash.
The Pioneer Women of Argentina yesterday turned over to Mrs. Sharett a check for the first installment of the cost of a new children’s home in Tel Aviv to be named for the wife of the Minister. Twelve hundred persons attended a farewell banquet here tendered by the major Jewish institutions in Argentina in Mr. Sharett’s honor, but his illness prevented his attendance.
