Rep. Jacob K. Javits today introduced an emergency immigration bill in the House to implement President Eisenhower’s requisition legislation to admit 240,000 aliens in excess of quotas in the next two years.
The Javits bill is similar to a bill introduced last week in the Senate by three Republican Senators, but makes additional provisions specifying that selection of immigrants shall be without discrimination on grounds of race, religion, or national origin.
The American Legion’s national executive committee announced today that it will support the McCarran-Walter Immigration Act against “any and all attempts” to repeal it. The committee “deplored” recent attacks on the measure and said its action was based on recommendations of the Leginn’s “Americanism committee.”
