J.I. Schwartz, Itzik Manger, Reuben Wallenrod and Dr. Simon Federbush have been awarded the Louis LaMed prizes for their Yiddish and Hebrew books, published in 1952, it was announced here today. This is the 13th annual award made for the two best Yiddish and two best Hebrew books published in the Western Hemisphere. A $500 prize goes with each award.
The Yiddish winners were Mr. Schwartz, for his autobiographical poem, “Early Years,” and Mr. Manger for his collected works, “Poem and Ballad.” The Hebrew winners were Mr. Wallenrod for his collection of short stories, “Within the Walls of New York,” and Dr. Federbush, for his work on Jewish law, “State Law in Israel,” The judges were Jacob Glatstein, Leibush Lehrer and Menachem Ribalow.
