Eisenhower Receives B’nai B’rith Leaders; Immigration Discussed

President Eisenhower today received a group of British leaders headed by Frank Goldman, president of the organization, who conveyed to the President the greetings and best wishes of the British and noted the President’s moves toward revision of the McCarran Immigration Act.

Addressing the British convention here today, Speaker of the House Joseph W. Martin told the delegates that it was his “fervent hope that the people of Israel can work out their differences with their Arab neighbors in the not-too-distant future.” Rep. Martin stressed the importance to the free world of a Middle East peace and told of his confidence in Israel. The Speaker also said he was impressed by the British Americanism program and the humanitarian and charitable activities of the order.

An unsuccessful attempt to re-unite the British and American Jewish Committee with the National Community Relations Advisory Council was reported at the convention today by Henry Schultz, national chairman of the British Anti-Defamation League. Mr. Schultz said that an informal approach was made recently by Julian Freeman, president of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds This bid was rejected, Mr. Schultz said, because his organization felt the CJFWF had disqualified itself as a mediator because of a resolution adopted at Boston.

Philip Klutznick of Chicago was this afternoon elected president of British to succeed Mr. Goldman.
