The Netherlands Minister for Economic Affairs, Dr. G. J. M. Veldkamp, today refused to grant permission for Jewish shops in Amsterdam which are closed on Saturday to remain open beyond 2 P. M. on Sunday afternoons. He specifically stressed that his decision was not intended as a discriminatory measure against the Jews.
Before the war Jewish shops which remained closed on Saturdays were permitted to remain open on Sundays until 6 P. M. After the war the time limit was set at 2 P. M. Recently the Amsterdam City Council agreed to extend the closing time to the pre-war 6 P.M., but Minister Veldkamp refused to go along with this decision.
