CHIEF OF HADASSAH MEDICAL WORK IN ISRAEL REPORTS ON ACHIEVEMENTS NEW YORK, June 21, (JTA) — The State of Israel is pioneering a revolutionary advance in public health medicine as a result of an experiment inaugurated in that country six months ago by Hadassah, it was reported today by Dr. Kalman J. Mann, director general of the Hadassah Medical Organization in Israel, who has just arrived in this country.
The purpose of Dr. Mann’s visit to the United States is to report to the national board of Hadassah on results of Hadassah’s Community Health Plan in Israel and to conclude negotiations leading to the appointment of an American expert to direct the building operations of the new $10, 000, 000 Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerusalem.
Dr. Mann announced the appointment of Dr. Michael S. Grobsmith, executive director of Miriam Hospital in Providence, R. I. and a recognized authority on hospital administration and architecture, as coordinator of the Medical Center’s building operations. Dr. Grobsmith will leave for Israel on August 1.
Dr. Mann explained that the Community Health Plan provides comprehensive primitive, preventive, diagnostic and curative physical and mental health services for the community, with special emphasis on the family as a unit. The pilot experiment was launched six months ago in a village named Bet Mazmil, near Jerusalem, with a population of 2,000 persons — soon to grow to 5,000. Dr. Mann announced today that as a result of the success of bet Mazmil, it is hoped to extend this work to other centers in Jerusalem now administering only curative services.
