The first loan fund designed to assist Jewish artisans in establishing small businesses was inaugurated here at ceremonies attended by French and Tunisian officials, representatives of the American consulate in Tunisia and Jewish leaders. The fund is sponsored by the Joint Distribution Committee and Jewish Colonization Association in cooperation with the Tunisian Jewish community.
Addressing the inauguration ceremonies, Marcel Gozland, Tunisian Jewish leader and president of the new fund, revealed that the institution would begin operations this week. He said that loans would be limited to $150–the equivalent of five months’ wages of a Jewish artisan–and would bear little or no interest.
One of the major purposes of the fund will be to provide money for Jewish artisans to open their own shops. The credit institution will also sponsor technical training courses for various craftsmen and will establish model workshops for them.
