The central denazification court here has begun the third trial of Franz Hofer, former Nazi gauleiter of the Tyrol on charges of having been responsible for the death of hundreds of Jews in his district. He was originally convicted of this crime in 1949, the decision was appealed and reaffirmed in 1952 and this trial is the result of a second appeal.
The prosecutor has charged that in an attempt to “shine” as an efficient administrator who cleared his district of Jews, Hofer took such drastic measures to search out and deport Jews that only nine managed to survive of a group of 600 in his district. The others died in Austrian concentration camps. Austrian officials, meanwhile, are said to be prepared to introduce proof that he was responsible for the death of 35,000 men, women and children in various camps.
