Two Ex-nazis Put on Trial for Deporting Jews from Offenba

Two former Gestapo officials, Johann ### and Josef Hedderich, went on trial here yesterday on charges of “having be### cessories, while exercising an official function, to aggravated deprivation ### and to the persecution of innocent people.”

In 1943 the two were in charge of the Gestapo in Offenbach near Frankfurt ### though Jews living in mixed marriage were not yet subject to deportation at ### Schmitz and Hedderich went beyond even the official Nazi instructions by de### scores of such Jews from Offenbach country. Almost all of their victims pe###.Schmitz and Hedderich were indicted by the Darmstadt District Attorney ### years ago. In an action, which observers consider significant for the way ### Germans feel about such cases, the Darmstadt court simply refused to arr###. The District Attorney then appealed to the Superior Court, which has now ### the trial to be held in Frankfurt.
