More than 40 “returnees” from Israel who attempted to enter Austria were arrested on the Italian-Austrian frontier, it became known here today. The group was originally not permitted to leave their car when the train reached Austrian territory. They were locked in the car and shipped hack to the Italian side of the frontier. However, the Italian border authorities refused to accept them and sent them back to Austria.
Anxious to avoid complications with Italy, the Austrian authorities arrested the Jewish passengers and placed them temporarily in a DP camp in Salzburg. The Israeli Consulate in Vienna, informed of their arrest, will take measures to secure their release and will arrange for their return to Israel.
