Foreign Minister Mothe Sharett announced here this week-end that the Israel Government had agreed in recent talks with Gen. Vagn Bennike, United Nations truce chief in Palestine, to a temporary cessation of work on the nine-mile long canal along the Jordan River in northern Israel near the Syrian border.
Observers here Interpreted the Sharett announcement as a gesture of goodwill toward the United Nations, Earlier, Gen. Bennike had asked Israel to halt work on the project, protested by Syria, until an agreement could be reached with the Syrian authorities on how the project should be carried through.
