The New Jersey State Supreme Court tomorrow will begin hearing a challenge to the Board of Education of the town of Rutherford, N.J., which has granted permission to the Gideon Society to distribute the King James version of the Bible in the public schools.
The constitutionality of the board decision was challenged and upheld in a Superior (lower) Court. The plaintiffs are a Jewish and Catholic parent in Rutherford, who have the legal assistance of the American Jewish Congress and the diocesian authorities of the Catholic Church. If the State Supreme Court upholds the decision permitting distribution of the Protestant Bible, the AJC plans to take the case to the United States Supreme Court.
