The United States and the United Nations were urged to take prompt action to bring about an immediate Arab-Israel peace at a meeting here tonight at Manhattan Center attended by more than 5,000 people. The rally also launched an emergency campaign for State of Israel Bonds.
Major speakers at the rally included Congressmen Emanuel Celler, Jacob K. Javits and Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr.; and Avraham Harmon, Consul General of Israel; Dr. Israel Goldstein, chairman of the executive committee of the New York bond drive, and Benjamin Abrams, chairman of the Greater New York Committee for State of Israel Bonds.
Declaring that Israel had made major gains during the past five years despite an economic, political and military siege on the part of the Arab countries, Mr. Harmon said “this Arab siege is entirely inconsistent with the spirit and the letter of the armistice agreement which calls for advance toward peaceful settlement. The United Nations rests on the concept that world conflict must be avoided by the promotion of peaceful cooperation among the nations of the world. ” He insisted that it is inconceivable that Arab hostility which has evoked Security Council condemnation in the past should be held to justify the denial to Israel of the rights to utilize its resources for its economic progress without harm to others.”
