“The Jewish vote in New York has had a paralyzing effect on the United Nations in its dealing with Palestine,” Dr. Cyril Garbett, Archbishop of York, charged today at a diocesian conference.
The Archbishop declared that the “civilized world has been horrified” by the destruction of Kibya and the killing of men, women and children by “regular forces of Israel.” He also attacked the Israelis for transferring their Foreign Office to Jerusalem and insisted that the situation in Palestine “is profoundly unsatisfactory” particularly as far as the Arab refugees are concerned.
He demanded “strong” action by the UN, warning that unless the present tension is lessened it will “snap and the Middle East will be ablaze. As long as the future of Jerusalem remains uncertain and there are tens of thousands of embittered Arab refugees on the other side of the frontier, there can be no real peace,” he declared.
