The Israel Parliament today gave its second and final readings to a bill providing programs for mothers, old age, disability and workmen’s compensation insurance and survivors’ pension. The Communist and Mapam deputies abatained.
The act provides for the establishment of a special insurance board under the jurisdiction of the Labor Ministry. It also provides for a special insurance court to hear cases pertaining to the law and set financial awards.
The Speaker of the Knesset today denounced as an action of “hooligans” the attack yesterday on Moshe Shapiro, Minister for Religion, at the funeral for the late Rabbi Iser Zalman Meltzer, famed Talmud authority. A group of ultra-religions Jews, attending the funeral, pushed and shoved the Minister about and knocked off his hat. They indicated by their shouts that they held him responsible for passage of the women’s national civilian service bill, which is unpopular with Orthodox elements.
