A resolution asking the U.S. Government to help bring about direct Arab-Israel peace talks was sent today to President Eisenhower and Secretary of State John Foster Dulles by the Junior Hadassah following the conclusion of its convention here.
The resolution, which was adopted at the convention, emphasized that the United States and United Nations “cannot continue to condone or tolerate Arab violation of United Nations agreements and Arab defiance of United Nations principles and purposes.” The convention acted after hearing an address by Reuben Shiloah, Minister Plenipotentiary of Israel, in which he described the United Nations censure resolution against Israel as “a disservice to the cause of peace in the Middle East.”
Mr. Shiloah said the censure resolution marked the first time that “intransigent Arab leaders have succeeded in deflecting world statesmanship from the furtherance of peace and security in the area.” He pointed out that “these Arab leaders have adopted a policy which may be summed up as neither peace nor direct talks with Israel. They have by now persuaded themselves, and have almost succeeded in convincing other nations, that this is the natural state of affairs.”
