The Council of Christians and Jews, at its annual meeting here today, called for “new comprehensive and constructive remedies” to bring about a solution of the Arab-Israel conflict and urged the United Nations to accept responsibility for “mediation and for bringing the two parties to a common table.”
These sentiments were incorporated in a resolution adopted without dissent after Dr. Cyril Garbett, Archbishop of York and critic of Israel, declared that this was a matter loaded with “political dynamite.” He warned that comments on the resolution, referred to the Council by its executive, should be made cautiously. No comments were made.
The report from the executive referred to the “tragic massacre” at Kibya which it viewed with “grave anxiety.” It welcomed the UN Security Council’s appeal–in its resolution on Kibya–to both sides to act to prevent further violence. It also declared that the inter-related problems between Israel and the Arab states could not be solved in “piecemeal” fashion.
