Assurance that he would continue his life-long policy of guaranteeing the security of the Jews under his jurisdiction was given by El Glaoui, Pasha of Marrakesh, to representatives of the World Jewish Congress in whose honor he tendered a luncheon at his palace here.
Speaking to Dr. M.L. Perizweig and A.L. Easterman, who are touring North Africa on behalf of the WJC, the Pasha said that he wanted to be considered a friend not only of the Jews of Morocco but of the Jews of the entire world. He sharply criticized the activities of the Arab League and expressed his resolve to prevent its agents from disturbing peaceful relations between Moslems and Jews in Morocco. The top Berber chieftain drew a sharp distinction between the ways of the Arab states of the Middle East and his regime in Morocco.
The Jewish spokesman told El Glaoui of the appreciation of the World Jewish Congress for his long unbroken policy of friendship for Jews under his jurisdiction. They underlined his determined and successful resistance to attempts by the Vichy regime to inpose anti-Jewish measures in the area under his rule, and his persistent efforts to suppress acts of terrorism at the time of the Israel war of independence. They also expressed confidence that he would continue his opposition to all attempts to ferment anti-Jewish incitement.
Before they conferred with El Glaoui, the WJC representatives met with Gen. Guillaume, the French Resident General at Rabat, administrative capital of Morocco, and high French administrative officials on social and juridical problems affecting the welfare and security of the Jewish community of Morocco, Gen. Guillaume expressed confidence that these problems would be solved as the economic and social standards of Moroccan Jews were raised.
