Ambassador Abba Eban of Israel called upon the Secretary General today and asked him to use his good offices to effect the release of three Israeli citizens now being held by police authorities in Bagdad.

The three citizens are: Mrs. Minnie Barnes, 31, of Tel Aviv, Mr. and Mrs. Yaacov Ben Zaria, both 60 of Givat Shimshon. They were taken into custody when their plane, which was en route from Cyprus to Teheran, made an emergency landing in Bagdad.

Mr. Eban pointed out to the Secretary General that such arbitrary arrest and detention of passengers in transit is a “flagrant violation of accepted international practice.”
