President Leslie Knox Munro is expected to call a meeting of the Security Council for this Thursday to hear Israel’s complaint against Egypt over Egypt’s extended blockade of shipping bound for Israel ports.
Israel charges Egypt with disregard of the Security Council resolution of September 1951 and with violation of the Israel-Egyptian armistice by denying passage to Israel-bound shipping through the Suez Canal, confiscating cargo destined for Israel and blocking access to the Israeli port of Eilat on the Gulf of Akaba.
Little likelihood was held out that the Council would consider again the Syrian complaint against Israel over the Bnot Yaakov hydroelectric project at any time within the near future. Protracted consideration of this issue ended last month when a Soviet veto upset the majority resolution. It has been the custom of the Council to drop an issue once a veto has been interposed, either permanently or for a long time.
