Thirteen displaced Jews, who were refused admission as immigrants to Brazil last month despite the fact that they had valid entrance visas issued by Brazilian consulates in Paris and Rome, were today allowed to land here under a writ of habeas corpus granted by a Brazilian court.
The court order here was obtained by HIAS and permits the 13 to remain in Brazil while their case is fought through the nation’s courts. They were refused admittance because a recent Brazilian ruling forbids the entrance of persons who are officially stateless, regardless of whether or not they were issued valid Brazilian visas. The 13 are stateless.
The 13, who went on with their vessel to Argentina after they were refused admittance to Brazil, returned to this port when the vessel touched here before continuing its return journey to Europe. In Argentina, where they were not permitted to disembark, representatives of the Jewish community boarded the vessel to give them assistance and reassurance.
