The suggestion that atomic energy could be used to level the high mountainous country between the Mediterranean coast and the Gulf of Aqaba and cut a sea passage between the Mediterranean Sea at Gaza and the Gulf of Eilath was made here today by Lord Leslie Hore-Belisha.
Speaking at an “Institute of Atomic information for the Layman,” Sir Leslie proposed that such a canal be used as an alternate route to the Suez Canal. He warned that transportation of the oil so necessary to the economy of Western Europe and which comes from the Middle East must not remain dependent on the Suez Canal. He offered a route for the new cut to follow the present Israel-Egyptian border from the Gaza strip to Eilath.
