A denunciation of the Rumanian Government for the arrest and imprisonment of Zionist and Jewish communal leaders in Rumania “not because they have violated any law, but simply because of their religion,” was voiced here today by Irving L. Hodes, grandmaster of the Jewish Fraternal order Brith Abraham, at the opening session of the four-day 67th annual convention of the organization.
Mr. Hodes also hit out at the methods of Sen. Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin as “creating a climate of disunity and fear in our nation” and outlined a program for American Jewry–unity for combatting anti-Semitism, discrimination in employment and education and the McCarran-Walter Immigration Law.
A message to the convention from President Eisenhower noted that “the results of your discussion may well be of importance to groups other than your own” and underlined the large number of Americans participating in fraternal groups and their activities. A message from New York State Governor Thomas E. Dewey called for aid to Israel by the American people.
