Edward B. Lawson, former U.S. Minister to Iceland, was sworn in here as new U.S. Ambassador to Israel by Secretary of State John Foster Dulles who expressed confidence that Mr. Lawson will successfully discharge his new duties.
Mr. Dulles emphasized that “a very special relationship” exists with Israel and that “it is extremely important to maintain friendly understanding”. Ambassador Lawson replied that he appreciates Mr. Dulles’ confidence and that he has no illusions about the difficulties he faces in Israel. He later estimated that it might be as long as three months before he actually arrives in Israel.
Secretary Dulles today discussed plans for strengthening Iraq militarily with the Iraqi Foreign Minister Fadhil Al Jamali. Mr. Jamali talked with Mr. Dulles for about 40 minutes and later characterized the meeting as “very friendly” and “productive”. Common American-Iraqi interests were stressed, he said, and “some Arab problems and some defense problems” were examined.
