Israel Ambassador Abba Eban today made known, after a talk with Secretary of State Dulles, on Israel’s reactions to the British withdrawal from Suez, that he will meet again very soon with Mr. Dulles to pursue important top-level consideration to the new situation in the Near East.

Mr. Eban drew the attention of the Secretary of State to reasons for Israel’s apprehensions, and cited reasons why steps should be taken to allay Israel’s fears. The Ambassador characterized today’s conversation, which lasted over an hour, as one in which the effects on Israel of recent Western policy decisions, especially concerning Suez, were seriously considered.

Tomorrow, Mr. Eban will meet with Undersecretary of State Walter Bedell Smith to pursue the matter further, Sometime later this week, the Ambassador will meet again with Secretary Dulles. Mr. Eban will fly to Israel next week for consultation with his government. He will remain in Israel for about a month.

The exact nature of today’s talk was not revealed in detail by Ambassador Eban, who explained that a fuller statement would be forthcoming at the conclusion of the present series of meetings. Preparatory to the session today with Mr. Dulles, the Israel Ambassador met last week with Henry A, Byroade, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs.

Meanwhile, it became apparent today that U. S. economic aid for Israel will be further reduced, as a result of yesterday’s reduction by $500,000,000 of the total foreign aid appropriation, although this specific application to Israel cannot be reliably determined until after the Appropriations Committee decides where to apply the cut.
