Finland was delegated to select the site for next year’s sessions of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, after a sharp debate at today’s meeting in which Lebanon, supported by the United States, insisted the meeting should be held at Beirut.
Prior to the decision to let Finland select the meeting place, Lebanon’s delegate argued that his country should be host to next year’s sessions, although he would give no assurance that Israeli delegates would be invited.
Representative Harold D. Cooley, of the United States, supported the Lebanese claims, declaring that the decision as to whom to invite must be left to the Lebanese Government. A number of delegations, led by the Swiss, contradicted Cooley sharply. Finally, the vote was taken on a resolution appointing Finland as the selecting delegation for next year’s sessions. That resolution was carried, after a secret ballot, by a vote of 43 against 8, with two abstentions.
