More than 40,000 men and women professionally serve the religious, educational and cultural needs of the American Jewish community and there is a “desperate” need for twice that number in communal service, Bernard Resnikoff, associate director of the bureau of personnel and training of the National Jewish Welfare Board, this weekend told the seventh annual assembly of the National Jewish Youth Conference, sponsored by the JWB. Mr. Resnikoff told the youth parley at Camp Cejwin, near here, that rabbis, teachers and social workers are most needed, and appealed to them to enter communal service.
Earlier, Prof. Oscar I Janowsky, speaking on the significance of the past 300 years of the history of Jews in this country, called for the establishment of an “overall body broadly representative of the various strands in American Jewry.” He urged that the American Jewish community discuss through such a representative body the needs and services of the community because soon these needs may “outrun our means, and priorities will have to be determined by every cause to establish its prior claim to public support.”
The parley received a message from Secretary of State John Foster Dulles calling on the conference to “generate the kind of leadership we must have if we are to keep society free.” More than 100 delegates and observers from 40 cities in this country and from Israel, France and Canada are attending the parley.
