State Department officials said this week-end that the tempo of the much-criticized Refugee Relief Act program is picking up with 8,435 visas now approved, of the 214, 000 authorized by the Act.
R. W. Scott McLeod, State Department security officer entrusted with administration of the refugee program, said it was “most encouraging that Governors of 32 states have responded to President Eisenhower’s request for cooperation, by setting up state committees to assist refugees in meeting the extremely complicated requirements of the Refugee Law.”
The United States has taken another step toward furthering solution of immigration problems in Europe, when President Eisenhower signed a bill last week giving U.S. ratification to the constitution of the Intergovernmental Committee for European Migration. American adherence to that pact will provide two-thirds of the ICEM budget, helping ICEM to move about 10,000 European overseas monthly.
