Israel Ambassador Abba Eban today conveyed to Secretary of State John Foster Dulles the Israel Government’s views on regional security matters. The occasion for today’s meeting was the Ambassador’s return from consultations with his government in Israel.
Mr. Eban made known that today’s talk covered only half the ground that was expected to be covered. The Ambassador, because of Secretary Dulles’ extremely crowded schedule and pending departure, just had time to present Israel’s views and hear the Secretary’s preliminary reactions. They agreed to continue the discussion.
The vital series of talks were described by Mr. Eban as still in an “intermediate stage.” He declined to discuss specific topics and would say only that various aspects of the broad problems in the area were generally examined. Informed quarters believe that he brought up Israel’s views on the arming of Iraq, Egypt, and possibly other Arab League states among other matters.
Today’s meeting was attended by Herbert Hoover, Jr., newly appointed Under Secretary of State, Henry A. Byroade, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, and others.
