Discussions leading to the establishment of the first school of its kind in Turkey have been opened here by Abraham Blass, ORT delegate. The talks between Turkish Government officials and Jewish communal leaders, on the one hand, and Mr. Blass, who has founded similar schools in Italy and Iran, on the other, are expected to lead to early training of artisans among Turkish Jews.

A projected enrollment of 300 to 400 will be housed at the local orphanage, part of which is no longer in use due to the emigration of orphans to Israel. Training will be carried out by Swiss and Israeli teachers and technicians. With local community approval already given, it is expected that the Ministry of Education will grant the necessary permits in the near future.

Istanbul has four elementary Jewish schools and one Jewish high school, formerly sponsored by B’nai B’rith, with a total enrollment of 3,000. Most well-to-do Jewish families, however, prefer to send their children to American, British and French schools here.
