Austrian Vice Chancellor Adolf Schaerf, leader of the Social Democratic Party, has withdrawn his demand that Socialists persecuted by the Dolfuss and Schuschnig regimes, from 1933 to 1938, be compensated under the same program as Jews and other Nazi victims, it was learned from responsible Socialist sources today.
This demand had held up an Austrian Government proposal to the world Jewish organizations because the Peoples Party would not agree to putting the Nazi and pre-Anschluss regimes in the same category. However, Jewish quarters have already indicated that the offer, drafted by Finance Minister Reinhardt, was unacceptable, even “distressing and shameful.”
A government spokesman announced that the Cabinet, at its meeting yesterday, had not discussed the proposal to the Jewish organizations. Under these circumstances, observers here believe that it is highly unlikely that talks with the Jewish organizations can be resumed before Chancellor Julius Raab’s American trip later this month.
