Nine women leaders of the United Jewish Appeal returned here this afternoon after a three-week fact-finding tour of Israel and North Africa shocked at the hopeless living conditions of women and children in Morocco.
Mrs. Hal Home of New York, National Women’s Division chairman and spokesman for the group, said she had been appalled to find vast numbers of Jews in Morocco, living in a medieval setting of poverty, ill-health, and lack of opportunity. “In marked contrast to the misery we saw in Morocco, “Mrs. Home said, “was the condition of friends and relatives of these same Jews who had gone to Israel and who had already been living there for three or four years. These families are really living in the twentieth century with good housing, schooling, and sanitation plus the opportunity to progress and grow with the country. “
