Jewish Poetess in Moscow Publicly Hits “cosmopolitanism” Campaign

For the first time since the Soviet campaign against “cosmopolitanism” was started in 1949, a Jewish poetess in Moscow, Margarita Aliger, came out publicly against this campaign, the Associated Press reported from Moscow.

The poetess, holder of the Stalin Prize for literature, has been in disfavor in official circles because after World War II she began writing poetry stressing her consciousness of her Jewish traditions. She has not written much in recent years, probably because of this disfavor.
