The Syrian-Israeli Mixed Armistice Commission today rejected a Syrian request for censure of Israel in connection with the seizure of a Syrian commercial passenger plane which Israeli army fighters forced down at Lydda Airport.
The seizure was made December 12 when, according to the Israelis, the Syrian plane entered a prohibited air lane. Israel released the passengers and crew, keeping the plane immobilized two days before letting it go. At the MAC hearing today, Syrian asked that Israel be censured and ordered to pay compensation. The Syrian motion fell through when the commission chairman, Lieut. Col. G. Castonguay, abstained from voting on the grounds that he doubted that the case fell into the Commission’s competence as an armistice violation.
Israel had also filed a complaint against Syria for violating its air lanes, but withdrew the grievance when the Syrian resolution failed.
