Improvements in the method of extracting uranium from low grade ores may make it possible for Israel to produce uranium on a “semi-industrial” scale from phosphates, Francis Perrin, French High Commissioner for Atomic Energy, declared here today at a dinner of the French Friends of the Hebrew University.
Commissioner Perrin expressed satisfaction at the collaboration between Israel and France in a “limited sector” of atomic research, and praised the work of Israel physicists. He paid particular tribute to the Israel method of distilling heavy water from ordinary water, a method since adopted by the French scientists. M. Perrin called for international intervention to help liberate the campus of the Hebrew University atop Mt. Scopus.
Baron Guy de Rothschild, a member of the University’s administrative council, told the dinner that the French Foreign Office is disposed to aid the University and, in general, to actively encourage the spread of French culture in Israel. Two French professors will soon occupy posts at the University, Baron Rothschild reported.
