Congressman Emanuel Celler of New York yesterday told Congress that the only protection for the Jews of Morocco and for American interests there is the French Government. Rep. Celler, who recently returned from a visit to Morocco described the conditions of the Jew under the Sultan there as “not even a second-class citizen.” “Citizenship in Morocco cannot be acquired,” he told Congress. “The Jews is a Moroccan but with no rights of a Moroccan.”
Rep. Celler called upon the United States to give these questions “most anxious consideration.” He said that Jews in Morocco are fearful of taking sides, so Jews outside of Morocco “cannot bury their heads in the sand.” The United States, with five bases necessary for the defense of the free world, has remained neutral between the French and the Moroccans, he stated. “We cannot long remain neutral because if the French leave, freedom for Morocco would mean not only anarchy, but intense hostility toward the United States.”
