The provincial government of New Brunswick has been asked by the New Brunswick Division of the Canadian Jewish Congress to keep the teaching of religion out of the public schools. The CJC unit acted after a group of churchmen had approached the government to press for religious instruction in the schools.
In a brief, submitted to provincial Minister of Education C.D. Taylor, CJC representatives and provincial Jewish leaders stressed that they regarded religious education a responsibility of the church, synagogue and home, not of the public schools. The memorandum warned that “any system of religious education undertaken in public schools inevitably gives state sanction to the particular brand of religion taught, and thus, in a sense, ‘establishes’ it.”
