The 43rd biennial national convention of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, central synagogue organization of the Reform movement, will open here this week-end. Some 2,000 delegates representing 500 Reform synagogues in every state of the Union, Canada, Curacao and Hawaii, will attend the four-day gathering.
During the proceedings 66 congregations which have been in existence more than 100 years, will be honored at a special Tercentenary celebration. Los Angeles Mayor Norris Poulson issued a special proclamation hailing the UAHC, which is meeting in Los Angeles for the first time in the organization’s history.
At the same time, 1,000 women representing sisterhoods affiliated with the 500 Reform Synagogues, will confer here at the 20th biennial convention of the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods. There are some 100,000 members affiliated with the sisterhood movement in seven countries. Another Reform group which is meeting at the same time is the National Association of Temple Secretaries.
With a “Three-E” theme of Ethics, Education and Exaltation, the convention will dedicate itself to consideration of many issues within the framework of American Jewish life, as well as of synagogue activity and administration. It will evaluate the Reform movement since its inception in the United States in 1825 to the present, and to map out programs for the future.
