The world Jewish population today is 11,867,000, according to figures presented in the 56th annual issue of the American Jewish Year Book published today. The United States has 5,000,000 Jews, the Soviet Union has about 2,000,000 Jews, and the Jewish population of Israel is 1,488,470.
In detailing Jewish population figures, the year book reports that the European countries with the largest Jewish populations, after Soviet Russia, are England with 450,000 and France with 300,000. In the Western Hemisphere, Argentina is second with 360,000; Canada has 230,000 and Brazil, 120,000.
The year book, which is published under the direction of the American Jewish Committee, contains studies of Jewish life throughout the world during the past year, including articles on various aspects of Jewish life in the United States. Among the articles in the Tercentenary volume are a survey of civil liberties developments in the United States during the past year, a study of relations between the United States and Israel, and an article on Germany documenting the extent of neo-Nazi infiltration into positions of authority in the West German government.
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
